Every year for my step dads birthday, my mom makes him a plate at Color Me Mine, or someplace similar. They are works of art, she got the creative gene in the family. As much as they are a gift for him, I think the best part of the process is talking about new design ideas and getting to spend the afternoon painting with my mom.
I love the idea of having a dedicated “celebration” plate. And while I wish I could paint a plate at Color Me Mine for everyone I know, I’m just not there yet! When I saw the photo below on Sugar Paper’s Instagram a while back I knew it was something I would be something I was easily able to turn into a DIY!
I picked up a basic white plate at World Market, and used a basic sharpie (however if you can find a paint pen sharpie, use that!) I sketched out the words I wanted on a scratch piece of paper and then tried my best to recreate it directly on the plate. I baked it at 350 for about 20 minuets and let it cool. I went with “its your special day” so that it is easily used for anyone on any day !
I wrote on the back of the farm dinner plates and so far they have stayed on well. I don’t put them in the dishwasher or scrub too hard so I think that helps.
I wrapped the cookies in plastic wrap and then the whole thing in a ton of bubble wrap. I stuffed the box with bubble wrap, padding, and paper, and then crossed my fingers it wouldn’t break. Luckily it got there on her birthday and in one piece!
It was such a fun, easy project, and I have already thought of a bunch of different ideas and uses for them, so I know there will be many more in my future!
